01/02/05 - Concern At Backlog Of School Repairs

Swindon’s Conservative Parliamentary Candidates have expressed their grave concern about the backlog of school building repair work that has built up locally because of “Government underfunding“.

Robert Buckland, South Swindon’s candidate, said: “A Parliamentary answer from a Government Minister earlier this month revealed that there is a shocking £25 million backlog to school repairs that need to be made over the next five years in Swindon. By their own admission, Labour is failing our schools, leaving pupils and staff having to grin and bear increasingly unacceptable conditions.”

Justin Tomlinson, North Swindon’s candidate, added: “The Labour Government’s consistent failure to adequately fund Swindon’s schools is the direct cause of this serious problem. Time and time again, Labour has short changed the people of Swindon with lower than average grant increases.”
