LIMITED AND CONTROLLED IMMIGRATION

Michael Howardhas set out the Conservative immigration and asylum policy.
Why Labour are all talk
In his 1997 manifesto, Mr Blair promised to establish a swift and fair asylum system. In his 2001 manifesto, he promised immigration rules will remain clear, firm and fair. All talk.
Under Mr Blair, immigration has more than doubled. The majority of people, forgotten by Mr Blair, think immigration should be tightly controlled.
Labour believe there is no obvious upper limit to legal immigration (David Blunkett, BBC TV, Newsnight, 12 November 2003).
A city the size of Peterborough is settling in the UK every year (ONS).
As the Governments own Community Cohesion Panel has said: The pace of change is simply too great in such areas [Bradford] at present.
In the first half of 2004 Britain was the second most popular destination for asylum seekers in the world (UNHCR, 2004).
There are 250,000 failed asylum seekers living in Britain today.
Liberal Democrats
The Liberal Democrats would give the EU complete control over our asylum and immigration system. They believe that there should be no upper limit on the numbers of refugees accepted by EU countries (Policy Paper 2004,
A Fair & Liberal Approach to Asylum). What will Conservatives do?
The Conservatives believe we need a fair immigration and asylum system that helps genuine refugees and gives priority to those who want to work hard and make a positive contribution.
A Conservative Government will set an annual maximum limit on the number who can settle in Britain, including a quota for asylum seekers.
Britain will take her fair share of the worlds genuine refugees. We have a moral obligation to help those fleeing persecution.
Conservatives will introduce an Australian-style points system for work permits giving priority to people with the skills Britain needs.
We will put in place 24-hour security at ports to prevent illegal immigration
These policies will reduce immigration.
People will face a clear choice at the next election: unlimited immigration under Mr Blair or limited and controlled immigration with the Conservatives.
Councillor Justin Tomlinson, North Swindon Parliamentary Candidate, "This is a real issue, that deserves to be debated. We need a fairer, more balanced system and we have set out a clear timetable on how we tackle this issue."
