14/10/04 Labour Shuts Local Post Offices

Cllr Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland have condemned Swindon's two Labour MPs for their failure to save three sub-post offices whose closure has now been confirmed.  The Conservative Parliamentary spokesmen were responding after the Royal Mail made its announcement.

This is disgraceful, said Justin. "The people of Swindon have been let down by Labour yet again.  Sub-post offices are key facilities in our local communities and elderly or vulnerable residents will suffer thanks to this decision."

Robert added, "Justin and I have worked hard to produce a petition from over 400 households in the affected areas.  Sadly, the views of the people of Swindon have been ignored."

Justin concluded, "The MPs represent the Labour Government who have closed thousands of Post Offices around the country since they came to power in 1997 decimating community facilities without a care.  If they are to offer true local representation they must understand the need to stand up to their Party masters, and finally put Swindon first."

They concluded, "Swindon needs a government that listens to the people and representatives who are prepared to stand up for the town in Westminster."
