With the Lib Dem's in meltdown in Swindon, the national picture gets no better.
As the Lib Dem's struggle to prove themselves as an opposition, their annual Spring Conference once again sets to embaress the main party as they can't hide their own members obsession with politically correct fads, rather than tackling the issues that matter to real people.
Liberal Spring Conference - The Facts
* Liberal Democrat party policy is made by their Party Conferences. As their own briefing documents explain, 'the Federal Conference is the final, sovereign decision-making body of the Party at federal level... Conference determines Party policy' (Liberal Democrats, Liberal Democrat Structure and Organisation, Policy Briefing 41, February 2001).
* On Saturday, Liberal Democrats will be debating a policy motion to allow 16 year olds access to hard core pornography, to abolish the law of blasphemy, and to prevent local authorities from banning sex shops and sex cinemas on moral grounds. Film and video classification for sex films would also be relaxed provided that animals were not harmed in the making of the film.
* Having previously campaigned for the legalisation of cannabis and the downgrading of ecstasy from a class A to a class B drug, on Sunday, they will also be debating a policy motion to ban smoking in public places, seconded by their health spokesman, Patsy Calton MP (Liberal Democrats, Spring Conference Agenda, March 2004).
Liberals - Not A Serious or Credible Opposition
Liberal Democrats pretend that they are the 'effective opposition'. Yet at a time when our public services are failing and terrorism threatens global security, their Conference agenda shows them to be a party obsessed with politically correct fads and completely out of touch with what most families care about. Liberal Democrats are not the party of moderation they claim to be on the doorsteps, nor are they a serious or credible opposition.
