Cllr Justin Tomlinson, Abbey Meads Conservatives, warned that Liberal Democrats were drawing up plans to introduce new taxes to drive on local roads across Swindon. The proposals were exposed in a leaked copy of the Liberal Democrats draft pre-manifesto which outlined congestion charging in our town and city centres as a Liberal Democrat priority.
This exposé comes on top of current work by Whitehall bureaucrats in the Department for Transport to introduce road charging across the country.
Cllr Justin Tomlinson warned,
The cat is out of the bag Liberal Democrats are secretly planning to push for new anti-car taxes in high streets, city centres and local roads across the country, on top of existing taxes."
I am very concerned about these leaked proposals which would decimate trade and local businesses across Swindon. The Labour Government and Liberal Democrats fail to understand that there arent viable public transport alternatives and that extra taxes will hit the vulnerable the hardest like the elderly, the poor and those in isolated rural areas. This is why I have pledged to oppose these new taxes.
