Hard-working families and elderly will suffer under new Lib Dem
local tax plans warn Conservatives
Cllr Chris Van Roon, North Swindon Conservatives warned today that Liberal Democrats were planning a new local income tax and regional income tax, which would mean soaring tax bills across Swindon. The proposals were outlined during the Liberal Democrats Party Conference in Brighton, and were promoted by the Lib Dem leader in Full Council on September 24th
Cllr Chris Van Roon explained,
We already know that taxes on income have been hiked up by Labour through higher National Insurance, supported by the Liberal Democrats. Now, LibDems are planning a new local income tax for Swindon and a regional income tax for South West to fund regional assemblies, on top of their plans for higher rates of national income tax.
These plans are bad news for the hard-working residents of Swindon. The average council tax across Swindon is currently £861. Replacing it with a local income tax and regional income tax could be equivalent to a tax rate of 5% extra on pay packets and savings income, on top of higher national taxes. This could mean £2912 a year bills for a typical two-earner household.
Local income tax has all the disadvantages of the old poll tax families and shared houses with more than one earner would see their tax bills soar. Pensioners would not escape either their savings income would be taxed to the hilt as well. Swindon deserves a fair deal, not ever higher taxes."
"The Lib Dems are determined to spend, spend and spend, and they need huge tax rises to fund their plans for; compulsary sex education for seven year olds, banning children from owning pets, giving prisoners the right to vote, burgulars not being sent to prison, increased red tape and Government interferance, surrending Government powers to the EU and scrapping the monarchy. Frankly the Lib Dems should be ashamed of themselves."
